Julian, California, is a small historic gold mining town in the Cuyamaca mountains about an hour an half by car from San Diego, originally founded by displaced Confederate veterans seeking their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is a historical site -- it is Japan's best-preserved castle, perched on top of a hill and surrounded by lush foliage. The sight of the grey, sloping roofs arching into the sky is formidable indeed, and a popular subject for photographs.

Himeji is a fascinating trip into Japan's past, with plenty of information available about the castle's history. For example, walking up the path, visitors will find themselves behind high, fortified stone walls -- there are many different-shaped holes, which were in fact constructed specially to give archers the best view out of the castles, but also to make a difficult target for enemy arrows to enter. Plane sitting on runway

[Feature Story] Travelling to Paradise, but you have to Get There First!

We relocated to Seoul, Korea from Connecticut when our four kids were aged three months, 17 months, four and five years old. The plane trip and associated travel were some of the toughest moments I can remember. The flight attendants shushing my kids, dropped and spilled food, other irritated passengers, a sobbing toddler when I escaped to use the bathroom, getting through security with two baby carriages, and the dreaded rousing of the jet-lagged children once we landed (and still had to make it through the terminal). I think our journey was the definition of "schlep" and no one had fun. (Read more ...)

Kids shopping at Harajuku

Harajuku District

The Harajuku district in Tokyo is like stepping into a whole different city. After visiting more upscale shopping districts like Ginza, with neatly ordered department stores and lovely, elegant shops, the bustle of Harajuku is an energetic change of pace. Teenagers and young adults wear outfits crammed with bright accessories (not necessarily matching) and elaborate costumes to visit Harajuku; the shops and sellers reflect the same vivid sense of style. Young men and women stand outside the shops, calling out sales pitches and Irasshaimase! (Come in!) Street performers and groups of chatting shoppers cram together into the streets, in a manner markedly more informal than other parts of Tokyo. (Read more ...)

Aerial view of Futuroscope

See the Future in France

The ultra-modern and forward-looking Futuroscope was not an attraction I expected to find in historic France. For this very reason it was a relief to our kids. Their feedback was that it was a day that, for once, didn't feel like a history lesson. (Read more ...)

Yellow bird in tree

Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve

First things first: you probably aren't going to see a jaguar during your visit to the Preserve. That point was made early on by our guide, a guy of Mayan descent who switched careers from logging to guiding when the Preserve was created in the mid-1980s. When we visited he'd been guiding for eleven years and seen a jaguar once.(Read more ...)

Red-footed Booby in tree

Half Moon Caye Natural Monument

It sounds like any guy's ideal tourist destination: a sunny, secluded island off the coast of Belize famous for its Boobies. But Half Moon Caye isn't a mecca for topless sunbathing, it's a breeding site for Red-footed Boobies of the flapping and squawking variety. (Read more ...)

Snorkelling off Caye Caulker, Belize

It's pretty easy to reach great places to snorkel off of Caye Caulker, Belize. We took a boat less than 30 minutes off shore, and paddled around in clear, warm water. The company we were with provided all the equipment. (Read more ...)
